Premier League clubs vote against reintroducing FIVE subs rule for the THIRD time

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola along with some other notable managers have always complained about the hectic schedule which is demanding a lot from the players and has resulted in numerous injuries.

All the top European Leagues along with the Champions League and Europa League allow FIVE substitutes in a match in order to protect players from this busy football schedule.

Premier League is the only exception as they allow only THREE substitutes. Although many managers have voiced concern for their players, the Premier League clubs have surprisingly rejected the FIVE subs rule for the THIRD time.

The FA and Professional Footballers’ Association wanted to reinstate the five subs rule but during the meeting on Thursday morning, 10 of the 20 clubs disagreed with the proposal. Only four more votes were required to reach the threshold of 14 votes, which is needed to approve the change in the substitutes rule.

After the Coronavirus break in the last season, five subs were also allowed in the Premier League but it was not continued into this new season as the mid and low table clubs thought that the big clubs would get an undue advantage because of their squad strength. So the five subs rule has now been rejected for the third time this season.

However, the teams will be allowed to name NINE substitutes in the bench rather than the previous seven. A special case of concussion substitute is also being talked about and is expected to be implemented from the new year.
