Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan's Champions Trophy Ends in Disappointment as Rain Forces Washout Against Bangladesh

Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 ended without a single victory as their final Group A fixture against Bangladesh was abandoned due to relentless rain in Rawalpindi.

This marks a disappointing conclusion to the tournament for the defending champions, who finished at the bottom of their group, below Bangladesh on Net Run Rate. Having suffered crushing defeats to both New Zealand and India earlier, the rain-induced stalemate provided no opportunity for redemption.

Batting Woes Define Pakistan’s Forgettable Campaign

Pakistan’s struggles throughout the tournament were evident, particularly in their batting performances. Their inability to build momentum in the PowerPlay proved costly.

Babar Azam

Against New Zealand, while chasing a challenging 320-run target, they managed a meager 22 runs in the first six overs, ultimately falling short by 60 runs. The contest against India saw them win a crucial toss but fail to capitalize, posting an underwhelming 241, which the opposition comfortably chased down.

Rain Plays Spoilsport in Rawalpindi

The much-anticipated fixture against Bangladesh offered Pakistan a chance to salvage some pride. However, their hopes were dashed as dark clouds loomed over Rawalpindi, ensuring there was no play possible. The rain remained persistent throughout the afternoon, leaving the outfield unplayable. Match officials had no choice but to call off proceedings at 15:30 local time, making it the second consecutive washed-out game at the venue following the South Africa-Australia encounter.

With the latest washout, both Pakistan and Bangladesh were awarded a point each, but it was the latter who finished above the hosts in the standings due to a superior Net Run Rate (-0.443 compared to Pakistan’s -1.087).

Champions Trophy Action Continues

With Pakistan and Bangladesh now out of contention, the focus shifts to the remaining group-stage fixtures. The next match in the tournament will see Afghanistan take on Australia in Group B at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on February 28. Australia, will look to cement their place in the semi-finals, while Afghanistan will be eager to pull off an upset and take revenge for their World Cup 2023 loss.

Following this, South Africa will face England in another crucial Group B encounter at the same venue on March 1. Both teams will be desperate for a win as the semi-final spots remain up for grabs.

In Group A, India will lock horns with New Zealand in Dubai on March 2 in a battle to determine who finishes at the top, With both teams already through to the semi-finals.

What Lies Ahead for Pakistan and Bangladesh?

Pakistan’s next challenge comes in the form of a white-ball series in New Zealand, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. The tour provides them an opportunity to regroup and rectify their shortcomings before the next major international assignment. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will return to home conditions as they prepare to host Zimbabwe for a series comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is.

With a forgettable Champions Trophy campaign behind them, both teams will look to bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures. However, for Pakistan, the sting of failing to win even a single match in their first ICC event at home in nearly three decades will undoubtedly linger.
