Can the Nvidia RTX 5070 outperform the RTX 4090?

Nvidia‘s recent CES 2025 announcement has turned heads in the gaming world: the RTX 5070, priced at just $549, promises to deliver performance on par with the $1,599 RTX 4090. But how realistic is this claim? With the introduction of Nvidia’s groundbreaking DLSS 4, the RTX 5070 challenges conventional expectations, but is it truly capable of beating the top-tier RTX 4090? Let’s dive into the details.

How DLSS 4 Unlocks RTX 5070’s Incredible Performance?

The secret behind Nvidia’s claim lies in DLSS 4 (Deep Learning Super Sampling), which introduces a powerful new technique called Multi Frame Generation. This allows the RTX 5070 to generate up to three additional frames per traditional frame, dramatically boosting frame rates in supported games.

In titles like Cyberpunk 2077, DLSS 4 has shown impressive results—upping the frame rate from 142fps with DLSS 3.5 to a staggering 243fps, compared to just 27fps without DLSS. This leap in performance is a game-changer for gamers who want high frame rates without spending a fortune on an RTX 4090.

The “Fake Frames” Debate: Are DLSS 4 Frames Authentic?

One of the main concerns surrounding DLSS 4 is the use of AI-generated “fake frames”. Unlike traditional graphics rendering, which relies on rasterization, DLSS uses artificial intelligence to predict and fill in extra frames, improving visual smoothness and performance. Critics argue that these frames aren’t “real,” questioning whether DLSS technology compromises the authenticity of gameplay.

However, for many gamers, the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. Nvidia’s improvements in DLSS 4 reduce latency—with only a 6ms increase in frame generation—ensuring smoother performance and minimal input delay. For most users, the difference in gaming experience may not be noticeable, especially considering the significant frame rate improvements.

Is the RTX 5070 Really a Competitor to the RTX 4090?

While DLSS 4 allows the RTX 5070 to achieve impressive performance levels in supported games, it’s important to understand that the RTX 4090 still holds the edge in pure rasterization. For gamers who want the ultimate in raw performance—especially in graphically demanding games—the RTX 4090 is still the top choice.

However, the RTX 5070’s AI-powered performance is an excellent option for gamers who want strong frame rates at a more affordable price. It’s ideal for those who are looking for high-quality visuals and smooth gameplay without splurging on the most expensive GPU on the market.

The Future of Gaming: AI-Driven Graphics

As Nvidia continues to push the boundaries with AI-powered graphics technologies like DLSS 4, the future of gaming is clearly shifting toward AI-assisted rendering. AMD’s FSR 4 and Nvidia’s DLSS 4 are setting new standards for image quality, lighting effects, and smooth gameplay. While some gamers may remain skeptical about “fake frames,” it’s evident that these technologies are becoming a permanent fixture in the gaming industry.

Conclusion: Is the RTX 5070 a Game-Changer?

In conclusion, while the RTX 5070 may not fully outshine the RTX 4090 in every scenario, it does come remarkably close—thanks to DLSS 4’s impressive frame-generation capabilities. For gamers who want powerful performance at an affordable price, the RTX 5070 is an excellent choice. As AI technology continues to evolve, DLSS 4 could very well shape the future of PC gaming, offering incredible value without sacrificing performance.
