The Story Behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is based on the acclaimed manga series by Koyoharu Gotoge, published under SHUEISHA’s JUMP COMICS. Since its debut in 2019, the franchise has captivated millions, with over 150 million copies sold across 23 volumes. The story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy whose family is brutally murdered by a demon. In a desperate bid to save his younger sister Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps.

The series first premiered in April 2019 with the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc, followed by the blockbuster film Mugen Train in October 2020. The subsequent TV series arcs, including the Mugen Train Arc and Entertainment District Arc, aired from 2021 to 2022. Most recently, the Swordsmith Village Arc debuted on Crunchyroll in 2023, shortly after the theatrical release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village-. In 2024, fans were treated to the Hashira Training Arc, following the release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To Hashira Training-.

Record-Breaking Success

The previous films in the franchise, including Mugen Train, have achieved both commercial and critical acclaim. Mugen Train holds the record as the highest-grossing anime movie of all time and the highest-grossing Japanese film globally, amassing over $500 million to date. It also ranks as the second-highest grossing anime film in U.S. box office history, boasting an impressive 98% critic score and 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (with over 10,000 verified ratings).

Where to Watch

For those eager to catch up on the series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
