The first rumors about AMD‘s Dragon Range processors appeared online almost a year ago, yet it wasn’t until many months after the fact that devices featuring these chips finally became official.
The Dragon Range series of chips are AMD’s high-end Zen4-based gaming CPUs that have been modified for mobile deployments, aka desktop processors molded for mobile form factors. Whereas AMD’s Hawk Point and Strix Point series also offer up to 16 cores using a dual CCD chipset. But they sacrifice GPU performance, with limited graphics capabilities.

AMD Ryzen 7 7840HX ‘Dragon Range’ Laptop Makes Its Debut in China with RTX 4060
Integrated graphics come with few appertains for gaming laptops since these systems normally use discrete GPUs. Even so, the Dragon Range processors pack a basic Radeon 610M GPU, arranged in a 2CU RDNA2 layout, intended for entry-level graphics tasks. In the last year, there have not been many devices with the Ryzen 7 7840HX processor—a lower-clocked, 12-core version of the 7845HX. The 16-core Ryzen 9 7940HX has surfaced in several products and even Mini-PCs (on the contrary).
The new 7840HX is only just starting to roll out, and already MSI is launching a new laptop in China to feature it. Designated Raider Shadow, this is with the 7945HX/RTX 4070 and 7945HX/RTX 4060 configs. The Raider Shadow incorporates RTX 4060 graphics and is designed to withstand a peak power draw of a whopping 195W (55W for the CPU and 140W for the GPU). Not a flagship laptop, but CPU specs put it ahead of just about all H-series laptops for performance.
MSI has released performance statistics showcasing the 12-core CPU and details it as around 8% faster than the 7845HX on Cinebench R23 multicore as well. The single-threaded performance scores, which are more important for gaming, were not shared, though. The laptop includes a 17.3-inch, 2.5K display with a 240Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 7 support, 1TB of storage, and 16GB of DDR5 RAM (expandable to 64GB). Despite lacking PCIe Gen5 support—a common feature for Dragon Range systems—the Raider Shadow is priced at 7,599 RMB (approximately $1,048 with taxes) and is currently exclusive to China.
