Inspiring the Six Triple Eight is the powerful, true story of the 6888th Battalion, the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas during World War II. Dispatched to Europe in February 1945, 855 women had the challenge of sorting through a mammoth backlog of 17 million pieces of mail that had built up over three years.
They did it in 90 days when they had only six months to do the job. They accomplished the challenging task in uncomfortable conditions, including working in buildings without adequate lighting or heating. Yet despite the adversity, the women of the 6888th were simply offering a much-needed and important service, helping to boost the morale of troops to ensure they could continue to write home to loved ones.
