Fans of the Netflix series Squid Game are excitedly anticipating the Season 2 debut in just a couple of months; however; there is news that the franchise is about to undergo major expansion. According to reports, from Deadline magazine, a brand new English language Squid Game series is currently in the works at the streaming platform, with David Fincher onboard, attached as the developer.
David Fincher to Lead the Squid Game Universe
Although the details are not fully revealed yet there have been rumors swirling around about the Fincher project, for quite some time now. Insiders hint that even though he may debut a movie prior to this TV series the general consensus is that the Squid Game would be his endeavor in 2025.
This marks the debut of the initial scripted series spin-off, from Squid Game; however the universe has previously been expanded with the series Squid Game: The Challenge, scheduled for a season and a video game franchise. The series led by Fincher would mark the debut of the adaptation, in English language to complement Hwang Dong-hyuk’s original Korean language thriller.
The series Squid Game explores intense themes that are similar, to the style of David Fincher’s past projects, like the 1997 thriller The Game, a story where individuals find themselves caught up in a mysterious and dangerous game without their knowledge. Rumor has it that Fincher has been, in talks with Netflix for a while regarding a project within the Squid Game universe. Possibly an English language film or series set in the U.S. with Dennis Kelly, from Utopia said to be working on the script.
Fincher has been a key figure at Netflix since he helped the platform establish its original content with House of Cards. He also created the cult crime thriller series Mindhunter and served as an executive producer on the Emmy-winning animated series Love, Death, and Robots. Historically secretive about his upcoming projects, Fincher has several options in development.
Following the release of The Killer on Netflix last November, he has been weighing his next steps, and sources suggest that Squid Game is likely to be his next significant endeavor. Expanding the Squid Game universe has been Netflix’s plan since the show’s explosive success in 2021, which remains the platform’s most-watched series, winning six Primetime Emmys from 14 nominations. Ahead of Season 2’s premiere on December 26, Squid Game has also been renewed for a third and final season.
