Raphael Varane is considering retirement from football by terminating his contract with Como. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender signed for the Serie A newcomers as a free agent after leaving United this summer.

However, after an injury on his debut, he is now considering leaving the club and putting an end to his professional career. The knee injury he sustained just 20 minutes into his debut is reportedly serious, and could spell the end for the veteran.

Varane joining Como on a two-year deal was one of the biggest signings in the club’s history. However, as was evident when he was at Manchester, his body is simply not the same it was before.

The 31-year-old prematurely retired from the French national team, and missed large parts of the last three seasons at Old Trafford as well. Now, it seems like he is set to step away from the sport to avoid any further long-term injuries.

While it would be disappointing for Como fans and for the player himself, it is best for his health since his body has been putting out signs that it cannot deal with the demands of professional football anymore.

Who is the manager of Como?

Cesc Fabregas
