On September 6, 2024, Hokato Hotozhe Sema dazzled spectators at Stade de France with his impressive shot put throw. His distance of 14.65 meters secured him the bronze medal and set a new Paralympic record, surpassing the previous mark of 13.49 meters held by Olokhan Musayev of Azerbaijan.

Sema’s remarkable feat also makes him the first athlete from Nagaland to win a Paralympic medal for India. This achievement adds a golden feather to India’s athletics cap, bringing their medal tally to 15 in the ongoing games.

Hokato Sema’s journey to the Paralympic stage is as inspiring as his performance. An Indian Army havildar with the 9 Assam Regiment, Sema’s athletic career began after a life altering incident in 2002 when he lost his leg due to a landmine blast during a military operation.

From these challenging circumstances, Sema rose to prominence in para athletics. Prior to Paris 2024, he earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and a silver medal at the Morocco Grand Prix. His commitment and resilience have been a source of inspiration to many.

In an emotional reflection, Sema dedicated his medal to his wife, who has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. “She has sacrificed a lot for me,” Sema said, highlighting her unwavering support even in difficult times. With his Paris Paralympics success, Hokato Hotozhe Sema has set a high bar for future athletes and has contributed significantly to India’s overall medal tally, which currently stands at 27 – comprising six gold, nine silver, and twelve bronze medals.
