In a landmark achievement for Indian esports, Team India has secured its place at the esteemed OXY 2024 event in Sochi, Russia, following an impressive performance in the South Asia Qualifiers. Held online from August 22 to 26, 2024, the qualifiers saw Team India emerge as the frontrunner, dominating competitors from Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

This remarkable victory marks India’s first-ever entry into the prestigious Sochi-based tournament, a significant milestone for the nation’s growing esports scene.

Historic Achievement at OXY 2024 Qualifiers

The OXY 2024 event, organized by the Russian Esports Federation and officially known as the “Открытые киберспортивные студенческие игры” (Open Esports Student Games), is set to be a major international competition featuring 38 national teams. India’s debut at this event highlights the country’s expanding influence in the global esports arena, bringing to the forefront the skills and dedication of Indian players on an international stage.

ESFI President Shri Vinod Tiwari expressed immense pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “India’s participation in OXY 2024 is a tremendous opportunity for our student players, offering them invaluable exposure to high-level competition. This prestigious tournament will not only showcase their skills on a global stage but also mark a significant moment for Indian esports, highlighting our growing presence in the competitive arena.”

Leading Team India, captain Abhishek Yadav shared his excitement, “We’re thrilled to have qualified for OXY 2024 as table toppers from South Asia. Our focus was on delivering our best in the regional qualifiers and securing a spot in the main event in Sochi, Russia, and I am extremely pleased with our dominant showing in the clashes against the region’s best. Qualifying for the main event is a milestone moment for the Indian esports community, and we will do everything possible to create a significant impact and showcase our talent on this global stage.”

The Journey to International Success

Team India’s journey to this triumph began with the National Esports Championship 2024 (NESC24), one of India’s largest and most prestigious esports tournaments. Held from August 12 to 19, 2024, NESC24 culminated in Team Avengers, comprising Abhishek Yadav, Dhruv Kohli, Subhadeep Das, Nagaraj, and Manav Kunte, being crowned champions. Their victory at NESC24 paved the way for their success in the South Asia Qualifiers, ensuring their participation in Sochi.

As the team prepares for the Sochi Games, the excitement surrounding their participation continues to build. The third edition of OXY promises to be a grand event with a substantial prize pool of 5,000,000 Rubbles (approximately INR 45 lacs) for podium finishers.
