Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan has become the subject of another gender debate at the Paris Olympics 2024. Lin defeated Sitora Turdibekova from Uzbekistan on a unanimous points decision in the women’s 57kg class, in her opening bout at the games.

Lin, alongside Imane Khelif, were disqualified from the World Boxing Championship in 2023, held in New Delhi. The reason behind the disqualification was a reportedly failed and undisclosed gender test.

The IOC is at odds with the IBA over concerns of ethics, governance and finances. As a result, the Olympics has continued to allow the pair to participate after they competed at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as well.

Angela Carini’s decision to forfeit the match against Imane Khelif made headlines, as she said she had never been hit so hard in her life. The Italian refused to shake Khelif’s hand right after the match, but apologised for her actions and said she would reconcile with the Algerian if she got the chance.

Khelif, on the other hand, is now in the semifinals of her category after her win over Luca Hamori.
