Google’s Next Tensor G5 Chip to Utilize TSMC’s 3nm Technology for Enhanced Efficiency

Google’s upcoming Pixel phone models are expected to be more efficient, than the ones as per a report. Although Google has been using Samsung-made Tensor G3 chips in its devices there are hints that the company might switch from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) for processors.

Despite indications of this change, it seems that the Pixel 9 series will still use a Samsung-produced Tensor G4 SoC with a different packaging approach aimed at improving upon last year’s Tensor G3 chip. However recent reports suggest that the next version, possibly called Tensor G5 could utilize TSMC 3nm process.

As a result, key clients such as Nvidia, Intel, Qualcomm, and Google seem to favor TSMC’s 3nm process. Sources within the industry mentioned in the article suggest that Google is looking to integrate TSMCs 3nm technology into its Tensor G5 processor.

Although Samsung will continue supplying processors for Google until the generation of Tensor chips the potential transition to TSMC for the generation (Tensor G5) demonstrates Google’s dedication to improving processor efficiency. By aligning its processor capabilities with Apple’s cutting-edge 3 processes used in iPhones Google aims to stay competitive.

Samsung, as the pioneer of the 3nm node in 2022 is still grappling with challenges related to achieving power efficiency and effective heat management. In comparison, the TSMC process offers more power efficiency than Samsung’s making it a preferred choice for many manufacturers going.

The advancements in process node technology are vital not only for managing smartphone heat but for server applications particularly given the growing demand, for AI features. Recently industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, from TF International Securities hinted that Samsung could switch back to using Qualcomm processors for its Galaxy S25 lineup. This move would mean moving from their Exynos processors, which were featured in the Galaxy S24 series in specific markets, like India this year.
