Chelsea unlikely to trigger Nico Williams’ €60m release clause over massive wage demands

After passing up the chance to sign Michael Olise, Chelsea are exploring the market for a new left winger. Nico Williams of Athletic Club is one of the names on their list, but a move for the Spain international looks unlikely, given how expensive it would turn out.

Williams has a release clause worth €58 million, which could rise to over €60 million, with taxes and add-ons. Moreover, his salary demands and agent commission are also quite high, making a transfer very difficult for Chelsea to carry out.

Chelsea unwilling to pursue Nico Williams over unaffordable transfer costs

🚨🔵 Chelsea position on Nico Williams has not changed: appreciating him as was on shortlist already last summer, but current package too expensive.

Release clause over €58m + taxes with main payment upfront and salary requests considered too high.

The youngster currently has a contract with the Basque club that runs till 2027, meaning his team are under no pressure to be forced into a transfer, especially if Chelsea can’t pay the release clause. But more importantly, the Blues’ hopes of restructuring their wage bill are ruling out a transfer for a player who could easily demand €300,000 a week.

This past season, the attacker scored eight goals and provided 19 assists in 37 matches across all competitions. He also helped his side to the Copa del Rey title, ending their 40-year wait for the trophy.

Barcelona are also interested in pursuing a deal for Nico Williams, but their financial constraints might also hold them back from triggering his release clause.
