The Sacking of Igor Stimac: Unfolding Drama Behind the Scenes

AIFF Terminates Igor Stimac’s Contract

In a dramatic turn of events, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided to part ways with Croatian head coach Igor Stimac on 17th June.

Following a series of disappointing results in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign, the AIFF terminated Stimac’s contract, offering three months’ salary as compensation.

This decision was made during a virtual meeting with senior officials, marking a significant shift in Indian football management.

Stimac’s Counteroffer and Stipulations

Stimac, who had two years left on his contract, was reportedly willing to resign without any compensation, but with a significant condition: the top brass of the AIFF had to resign as well. This unusual stipulation was rooted in Stimac’s belief that the leadership should also be held accountable for the team’s failures. When the AIFF did not comply with his terms, a legal battle seemed imminent.

Financial and Contractual Complications

The termination of Stimac’s contract came with its own set of financial and legal complications. Initially, it was believed that paying out the full compensation for the remaining two years of his contract would be a substantial burden on the AIFF. Stimac’s contract, extended in October 2022 and again in 2023, included salary increases from $24,000 to $30,000 in the first year, and up to $40,000 in the final year. The absence of a severance clause initially added to the complexity of the situation.

However, it was later revealed that his contract did include a termination clause, though not tied to performance metrics, complicating the termination process further. This detail indicated that the saga might not conclude swiftly.

AIFF’s Stance and Official Statements

The AIFF, through its acting Secretary General Mr. Satyanarayan, officially notified Stimac of the termination, thanking him for his service and wishing him well in future endeavors. The federation had hoped for a voluntary resignation from Stimac after the unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign, but when that did not occur, they felt compelled to take decisive action.

An AIFF official told News9 Sports, “We have offered him three months’ salary as compensation. He is yet to respond to our letter informing him of our decision.”

Performance and Public Perception

Stimac’s tenure as head coach saw mixed results, with his position becoming increasingly untenable following poor performances. India’s failure to progress to the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, particularly after drawing 0-0 with Kuwait and losing 1-2 to Qatar, was a major setback. The team finished third in their group, with Qatar and Kuwait moving forward, dashing Stimac’s promises to lead India to historic qualification milestones.

The disappointing outcome at the AFC Asian Cup in January, where India lost all three group games without scoring and conceding six goals, further fueled calls for his dismissal. Despite these failures, Stimac did not resign immediately, indicating he would consult with the federation before making any decisions.

The Road Ahead

As the situation continues to evolve, the future of Indian football hangs in the balance. The legal tussle between Igor Stimac and the AIFF could set a precedent for how coaching contracts and terminations are handled in Indian sports. For now, the AIFF is focused on finding a new head coach to steer the national team forward.

The termination of Igor Stimac’s contract has opened a new chapter in Indian football, one fraught with legal, financial, and administrative challenges. The AIFF’s decision underscores the high stakes involved in international football management and the complexities that come with contractual obligations and performance expectations.

In conclusion, the sacking of Igor Stimac has not only highlighted the inherent tensions within Indian football’s administrative structures but also set the stage for a protracted legal battle that could reshape the future dynamics between coaches and the governing bodies in Indian sports.
