Barcelona midfielder Pedri González addressed the media after La Roja’s second training session in Donausenchingen, Germany, ahead of the Euro Cup. Having overcome a season filled with physical challenges, Pedri is set to be a leading figure for Spain as they aim for their third continental title.

Pedri González: Overcoming Physical Challenges

Pedri shared his relief at regaining his physical form:

“I feel very good physically and am looking forward to the first game against Croatia. I’m not afraid of a relapse; it seems like the press is more concerned about it than I am. It was a complicated season, but now I’m in a great moment, eager to play and enjoy.”

Adapting Spain’s Style

When asked if Spain’s famous style from 2008 to 2012 has been abandoned, Pedri noted:

“Comparing ourselves with the team that made us world champions is tricky because we will fall short in many areas. We have different qualities now and don’t always have to stick strictly to possession. Our main goal is to win.”

Team Dynamics and Leadership

Pedri emphasized the strong team spirit within the squad:

“Our greatest asset is that we are a team, a family on and off the field. There’s no clear leader here; the captains help a lot, but it’s our unity that sets us apart from other teams.”

Role Under Luis de la Fuente

Discussing his role under coach Luis de la Fuente, Pedri said:

“Now I play further forward, closer to the danger zone with more chances to score. I work on finishing every day. Luis gives me a lot of confidence, especially during tough times. He makes you want to work harder.”

Anticipation for the First Game

Pedri expressed excitement about the upcoming match against Croatia:

“We’re really looking forward to the game against Croatia. It’s crucial to start well, but we can’t get anxious if we don’t win. We’re young, ambitious, and ready to give it our all.”

Advice for Lamine Yamal

On guiding young talent like Lamine Yamal, Pedri advised:

“Lamine doesn’t need much advice. He plays and enjoys himself without worrying about the pressure. If he has questions, we’re here to support him.”

Euro Cup Objectives

Regarding Spain’s goals for the Euro Cup, Pedri concluded:

“We’re here to win. In the last Euro Cup, we had a great run and were close to winning if not for penalties against Italy. I feel important, and the coach makes me feel that way too.”

Pedri’s confidence and the team’s unity promise an exciting journey for Spain in the Euro Cup 2024, and they remain one of the fan favourites to win the Euros, which is all set to begin on 14th June.
