A new installment in the “Insidious” franchise is scheduled for theatrical release.
This upcoming entry from Blumhouse Productions, co-produced by Screen Gems, has been slated by Sony for an August 29, 2025 release.
New “Insidious 6” Project Announced, Details Scarce
No further details about the new project were disclosed, including whether series regulars such as Patrick Wilson and Leigh Whannell would be involved. This newly announced feature differs from “Thread: An Insidious Tale,” an in-universe series spin-off reported by Deadline in May 2023, which is set to star Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, with Jeremy Slater attached to write and direct.
Unless other “Insidious” installments are released before this new one, it would mark the sixth entry in the horror franchise and the first since last year’s “Insidious: The Red Door.” That fifth entry saw actors Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins return to the series, with Wilson also making his feature directorial debut. “Insidious: The Red Door” was a bright spot at the summer box office, grossing $82 million domestically and $189 million worldwide against a modest production budget of $16 million.
“Insidious” Franchise Continues Despite Previous Hiatus Announcement
Since its launch in 2010 with director James Wan, the “Insidious” franchise has grossed over $730 million globally. The series has changed distributors over the years, moving from FilmDistrict to Focus Features to Universal to Sony, but Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions has produced every installment, co-producing with various other production companies. Screen Gems returns for this new entry after joining for “Insidious: The Red Door.”
Prior to the release of “The Red Door,” Blum hinted at a lengthy hiatus for the series in an interview with DiscussingFilm. He stated that the fifth entry “is going to be the last we’re going to see of ‘Insidious’ for a while” and that “It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. … There’s not a plan — as there has been with every prior ‘Insidious’ movie — there’s no current plan in place for number six.” If Sony’s new release date holds, this period of dormancy will have lasted just 25 months.
Patrick Wilson Discusses Directing “Insidious” and Franchise Evolution
“Insidious: The Red Door” marked the fifth installment in the series and served as the directorial debut for franchise star Patrick Wilson. In an interview with Collider last year, Wilson shared his reasons for stepping behind the camera for “Insidious.”
“I think, like everything, like all of us, you look at the opportunities you’re presented with, the opportunities that are in front of you, your goals shift as your career shifts,” Wilson explained. “Most of my career, any actor’s career, is you’re just kind of a gun for hire, right? That’s just the nature of the beast. I think with this movie it was a great fit and an incredible opportunity because nobody makes these movies better than Blumhouse, and I’ve done several movies with these guys and I knew I’d be taken care of.”
Wilson’s involvement in another James Wan horror franchise, “The Conjuring,” has expanded into a vast property with numerous spinoffs and sequels. It seems that “Insidious” could be on a similar trajectory.
Sony and Universal Unveil Slate of Upcoming Releases
This week has seen a flurry of release date announcements, with Sony revealing earlier today that its new film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (of “Do Revenge” fame), is set for release via Columbia Pictures on July 18, 2025.
In addition, Universal shared its lineup, with Blumhouse’s thriller “The Woman in the Yard” slated to open on Friday, March 28, 2025, followed by Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse’s “Drop” on Friday, April 11, 2025, and Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” haunting theaters on Friday, December 5, 2025. Also announced was the rescheduling of Blumhouse’s “The Black Phone 2” from June 27, 2025, to Friday, October 17, 2025, and Blumhouse’s “M3GAN 2.0” moving from May 16, 2025, to June. All Universal films will receive wide releases.
Less than a week ago, Sony disclosed that Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated zombie flick “28 Years Later” will debut next summer, hitting theaters on June 20, 2025.
