The announcement was made at the Nintendo Indie World Expo, and the first trailer hints at a swashbuckling adventure unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the Steamworld universe.

Ahoy, Mateys! A New Crew Sets Sail
Heist 2 is an important turning point in the series. While retaining the series’ signature turn-based ricochet combat, the sequel boasts a vibrant tropical setting, a brand new cast of characters led by the courageous Captain Leeway, and a much larger scale.
According to producer Peter Magnusson, “is a milestone in size and scope for the series.” You’ll be able to see a more detailed narrative, better crew customization system that includes those iconic hats! and an arsenal filled with new weapons.
From Space Hulks to Sun-Drenched Seas
The original Steamworld Heist, released in 2015, channeled the spacefaring spirit of Firefly. But this time, inspiration is leaning more toward the steampunk Pirates of the Caribbean or One Piece.
However, art director Brandt Andrist assures fans that the game will not be a straight up “yoho pirate” game, so expect a unique twist on the theme of high seas adventure.
Uncharted Waters: Exploration and Ship-to-Ship Combat
An interactive map of the world is a key addition to Steamworld Heist 2. In this location, players will be engaged in exciting ship battle action and embark on an extensive exploration that brings a whole new level of strategy and depth to the experience.
Redefined Tactics: Bullets, Bombs, and Build Variety
While the core of Steamworld Heist 2’s play style is still focused on turning and ricocheting, new ideas crop up in this sequel as it introduces a new work system.
Each type of weapon can now be equipped by characters, each unlockable unique ability that can be mixed and matched to different play styles and strategies.

Steamworld’s Next Chapter: A Return to Form?
Steamworld’s history with Nintendo is long and fruitful, especially since the success of Steamworld Dig 2 on Switch has been enormous. However, recent titles haven’t quite captured the same critical acclaim, with 2023’s Steamworld Build receiving a score in the 70s.
With Steamworld Heist 2 launching across various platforms including PlayStation consoles, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch on August 8th, fans are eager to see if the sequel can recapture the magic of the original and propel the series forward.
