Maurizio Sarri has resigned from his post as the manager of Lazio, as per reports coming out of Italy. The loss against Udinese proved to be the final straw, with their opponents earning only their second win of the season.

Sarri’s team were also eliminated from the Champions League, losing to Bayern Munich 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 in spite of leading 1-0 at the end of the first leg.

As a result of the resignation, Maurizio Sarri is reportedly leaving as much as 5 million Euros on the table, which he would have received if he was sacked by the club over a lack of results.

The team is currently ninth in the Serie A table in spite of finishing second last season. They have lost 12 out of 28 games this season, and risk missing out on European football altogether unless they can finish the season strongly. Moreover, they also have the Coppa Italia to play for.

The capital club will play Juventus over two legs in the semifinal to face either Atalanta or Fiorentina in the finals of the tournament, if they can beat the Bianconeri.

Sarri joined Lazio in 2021 after a year’s sabbatical following his league title win at Juventus at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 65-year-old, who also won the 2019 Europa League with Chelsea, is most famous for the flamboyant Napoli team which nearly won Serie A in 2018.
