AMD amplifies Telecom Collaborations and Unveils Cutting-Edge 5G, 6G, vRAN, OpenRAN Innovations at MWC 2024

Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are increasingly embracing open and virtualized networks in the 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) space. The shift towards vRAN and OpenRAN-based systems offers numerous benefits, including enhanced flexibility in building, customizing, and managing networks to meet diverse needs.

AMD Expands Telco Partner Ecosystem and Showcases Advances in 5G & 6G, vRAN, OpenRAN at MWC 2024

Moreover, these systems pave the way for cloud-native technology and offer vendor flexibility, setting them apart from traditional RANs. As this trend gains traction, industry leaders like AMD are stepping up to support this transformation.

AMD at the Forefront of Telco Innovation

AMD continues to focus on the future of telco, marking its presence at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 26-28. Here, it will showcase a range of demonstrations, including 5G Advanced and 6G with AI. Additionally, AMD is set to collaborate with a host of software and solution stack ecosystem partners at their booth in Hall 2, Stand 2M61.

Strengthening vRAN Leadership with Samsung

AMD’s ongoing collaboration with Samsung in the telco space has led to the development of virtualized RAN solutions powered by AMD EPYC™ processors. This partnership was recently highlighted when Samsung and Vodafone conducted an end-to-end call using AMD EPYC CPUs to power Samsung’s Open RAN technology. This joint venture represents a collective effort to enhance the Open RAN ecosystem and deliver high-performance solutions for the telco space.

Boosting Open RAN Adoption

Parallel Wireless, a telecom industry innovator, recently announced that their GreenRAN™ software platform is now fully CPU agnostic. They also revealed a collaboration with AMD, utilizing AMD EPYC 8004 Series processors to revolutionize their Open Ran solutions. These developments underscore AMD’s commitment to enabling open, standards-based solutions and fostering Open RAN adoption for a more diverse telco environment.

Pioneering Telco Innovation with 5G and Compute

4th Gen AMD EPYC processors are being utilized by Ericsson and Telstra to drive energy efficiency and modernization in innovative 5G core functions. By powering Ericsson’s Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), combined with Ericsson’s Packet Core Gateway and Packet Core Controller solutions, AMD EPYC CPUs have reduced energy consumption by up to 49%, according to Ericsson.
