Wayne Rooney has been sacked as the manager of Championship club Birmingham City 83 days after being appointed. And in the process, he has become the shortest serving manager in the history of the club, overtaking Gianfranco Zola.

The former Manchester United player was unable to continue the form established by John Eustace, and the club currently sits 20th in the table, six points away from the relegation zone. They were sixth in the table when Rooney was appointed, and he has only led them to two wins in 15 games, while losing nine.

“Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset,” read a statement from the club.

“Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the football club.”

The decision to replace John Eustace with Wayne Rooney never went down well with the fans in the first place. The new ownership was harshly criticised for bringing in the former Derby County manager, who didn’t have a stellar record even prior to his stint at Birmingham City.

Former Leeds and RB Leipzig manager Jesse Marsch has been rumoured as a possible option for Birmingham. And it now remains to be seen who takes over from interim manager Steve Spooner in the upcoming weeks.
