10-man Germany win FIFA U-17 World Cup 4-3 on penalties vs France after thrilling final

In spite of finishing the game with 10 men, Germany won the FIFA U-17 World Cup 4-3 on penalties against France. The German youngsters have won the title for the first time ever, spearheaded by forward Paris Brunner, who scored a brace in the semifinals as well as in the finals to finish as the tournament’s best player, winning the Golden Ball.

Brunner scored a penalty near the half-hour mark to open the scoring and send his side into the tunnel 1-0 ahead. After half time, both teams played on the offensive, with Noah Darvich doubling their lead six minutes into the second half.

Only minutes after Germany went 2-0 up, France powered themselves towards a comeback, with Bouabre making it 2-1. Near the 70th minute, Winners Osawe was sent off for picking up a second yellow, putting his side in a precarious position.

France managed to equalise late in the game through Mathis Amougou, sending the two teams into penalties. Just as they did in the semifinals against Argentina, Germany defeated France 4-3 on penalties as well to win the title.

Argentine forward Agustin Ruberto won the top scorer award for scoring eight goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick in the semifinals, while France’s Paul Argney won the Golden Glove award in spite of losing the final.
