Apple OLED Revolution: Bringing Cutting-Edge Displays to Nine Devices by 2027

Recent reports indicate that Apple has plans to expand the use of OLED display technology in its iPad and MacBook lineups over the years. The rollout will begin with the introduction of OLED displays on the iPad Pro models. By 2026, Apple aims to incorporate OLED displays on both the iPad mini and iPad Air, with an increase in screen size for the latter from 8.3 to 8.7 inches.

For the iPad Pro series Apple intends to utilise a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panel, ensuring that only these high-end models will have ProMotion capabilities with rates up to 120 Hz. On the other hand, the iPad mini and iPad Air will feature a stacked low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panel.

In an upgrade planned for 2027, Apple plans to introduce next-generation display technology for their iPad Pro models. This advanced display will improve efficiency through Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) resulting in a 20% reduction in power consumption. Additionally, this innovation could potentially pave the way for under-display camera technology implementation on iPads bringing about a development, for these devices.

In the coming years, there is anticipation for a significant display upgrade in the MacBook lineup. It is predicted that the 16-inch MacBook Pro will adopt the technology by 2025, followed by the 14-inch model in 2026. Furthermore, both the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models are expected to shift from LCD to OLED screens by 2026.

OLED displays bring several benefits, including increased brightness, a higher contrast ratio, improved color accuracy, and lower power consumption compared to traditional LCD panels. Apple, already utilizing OLED in iPhone and Apple Watch models, seems keen on extending these advantages to its iPad and MacBook devices.

Notably, the thinner and lighter nature of OLED panels will offer specific advantages to the iPad lineup, enhancing both form and function. As Apple continues to embrace OLED technology, users can anticipate a significant leap forward in display quality across its diverse product range.
