Turkey shock Germany with 3-2 loss in Berlin as pressure piles on Nagelsmann

Turkey handed Germany a 3-2 loss at home, being roared on by their fans as Julian Nagelsmann drew in more pressure from fans only months after being appointed.

Kai Havertz scored only five minutes into the game, in spite of starting at left-back. However, that was not a clear sign of things to come later on. With Marc Andre ter Stegen ruled out via injury, Kevin Trapp started between the posts. Nagelsmann opted for an unconventional formation, and his tinkering didn’t pay off as the Euro 2024 hosts were unable to overturn their dismal form at home.

Two quickfire goals from Fenerbahce left-back Ferdi Kadioglu and Juventus youngster Kenan Yıldız allowed them to go into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The Germans defended poorly, with Nagelsmann’s tinkering leaving the team exposed on multiple occasions. Niclas Fullkrug’s early second half goal restored faith that the home team would be able to get a result in Berlin. But, VAR deemed Havertz to have handled the ball in the 70th minute, and Yusuf Sari dispatched the spot kick to guide his side to a huge win.

In spite of the passing of the torch from Hansi Flick to Nagelsmann, the results have not improved for the German national team. The fans have become increasingly disconnected with their national side over the massive drop in form over the past decade, and a failure to get a decent result at the Euros at home would be another blow following their dismal results in the last two World Cups and Euros.
