Deepawali 2023 Date: When is Diwali, 5 Days Explained!

Diwali (formerly Deepawali) is one of the country’s most celebrated festivals. A Hindu celebration that marks the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness Diwali usually falls on or around November 15 of the Kartik month in the Hindu calendar, though the actual date can vary each year due to the lunar cycle shift.

Diwali will take place this year on November 12th, 2023, but may vary according to different regions and traditions within India. Diwali is celebrated over five days, starting with Dhanteras and ending with Bhai Dooj.

1st Day: Dhanteras, November 10, 2023

Dhanteras (10 November 2023). Dhanteras is considered an auspicious day for buying new gold or silver items and is widely believed to bring good luck and prosperity into a household.

2nd Day: Choti Diwali, November 11, 2023

Choti Diwali – 11 November 2023: On the second day of Diwali is Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali – which marks Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura and represents the triumph of light over darkness. On this day in certain regions, earthen lamps filled with oil are lit to symbolize this event and demonstrate the triumphant victory of light over darkness.

3rd Day: Diwali, November 12, 2023

Third-Day of Diwali (2023-2024): Diwali marks its peak celebration each year on November 12th when people light diyas (earthen lamps) and decorate their houses with colorful powder patterns known as Rangolis, lighting diyas to light the way for festive gatherings of family, exchanging gifts and sharing traditional sweets with one another.
People visit temples to pray to Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity.

4th Day: Govardhan Puja, November 13, 2023

Fourth Day: Govardhan Puja – 13 November 2023 On November 13th is celebrated Govardhan Puja to remember Lord Krishna’s act of lifting Mount Govardhan to protect his people from an angry Indra (god of rain). People make cow-dung sculptures to represent Mount Govardhan and decorate it with flowers and other offerings to ward off Indra. Annakoot (sacred offerings to gods) also occurs this day when devotees give gifts such as food items as offerings of thanksgiving for everything in life that has happened so far this month!

5th Day: Bhaiya Dooj, November 14, 2023

Bhaiya Dooj (Brothers Day), on November 14, 2023, marks a festive occasion that recognizes sibling bonds. Sisters traditionally mark their brothers with vermilion marks and pray for their wellbeing on Bhai Dooj; in return, brothers give gifts as symbols of affection and protection towards their sisters.


Diwali is celebrated throughout India and other parts of South Asia, such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and Mauritius, to spread joy, positivity, and cheer among people from diverse backgrounds.

Finally, Diwali 2023 begins on 10th November (Dhanteras) and runs until 14th November (Bhaiya Dooj).
