Official: Wayne Rooney becomes new Birmingham City head coach

The rumours doing the rounds recently have now been confirmed with Birmingham City appointing Wayne Rooney as their new manager. The former Manchester United and Everton midfielder has taken up the third managerial job in his career after leaving DC United recently.

He was previously in charge of Derby County in the Championship, but didn’t have the most positive results with them, registering only a 25% win rate. The same stats followed him to the MLS, with DC failing to qualify for the playoffs.

Rooney will be joined by former England teammate Ashley Cole, John O’Shea, Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth as part of his backroom staff at Birmingham City.

The former England captain has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Birmingham City. But, fan reaction hasn’t been the best when it comes to the arrival of one of the most prominent names in English football.

John Eustace was surprisingly sacked earlier this week, with the board citing a need to see more impressive football even though the club was in the playoff spots. Choosing Wayne Rooney to replace Eustace has been labelled a gamble by fans considering the rather appalling managerial record he has had thus far.

But, the 37-year-old will have a chance to prove himself and implement his ideas freely, in contrast to his time at Derby where administrative issues and a points deduction added to the club’s woes.
