Sevilla have confirmed the signing of former Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz on a short-term deal. The player left Los Blancos as a free agent at the end of the 22/23 season, and has now chosen to stay in La Liga.
The Spanish side have confirmed his arrival and shirt number as well on their official website.
“After last night’s announcement of an agreement in principle, Mariano Díaz has officially signed for the club.
“The striker arrived in Sevilla this morning and signed a one-year deal after passing his medical.
Mariano Diaz signs for Sevilla until 2024
“Once the signing is officially confirmed by LaLiga, Mariano is available to play for the first team and he will wear the number 12 shirt. Initially, Lukebakio was due to wear the number 12, but he will now take the number 11 after the departure of Tecatito,” an official statement from the club read.
The forward came through the Castilla academy but was unable to break into the first team. He spent one season with French side Lyon in 2017, scoring 18 goals in 38 games before returning in 2018. He was still left on the bench for the most part, and left as a free agent at the end of his contract in June 2023.
It remains to be seen whether he will replace Youssef En-Nesyri as the first-choice striker for the club. The chances are low considering the form the Moroccan was in last season.
