Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’ has a fair start at the box office; good reviews boost film’s growth over the Independence Day weekend

Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’ has had a clothed start at the Indian box office despite the “Gadar 2” wave. Reviews from critics and audiences are positive, with the film set up for a promising protracted weekend. Trade experts suggest it opened to double digits had it not contravened with another movie. OMG 2 is winning over big city circuits, relying on expression of mouth to boost collections. The Indian box office has been revitalized, with OMG 2 and Gadar 2 drawing crowds.

Akshay Kumar‘s ‘OMG 2’ is off to a just start at the Indian box office. The film, which was mired in controversy gaining of its release, has managed to get a firm balance at the box office, setting itself up to see some good evolution over the extended weekend.

According to job experts, had the film avoided a clash, it would have supposedly opened to double digits at the box office. The Sunny Deol movie has reportedly drawn crowds in mass circuits, but OMG 2 is winning over viewers in big city circuits.

Unlike Gadar 2, OMG 2 depends on the expression of mouth to boost its collections. With audiences attracted to social media to rave about the film and its ‘bold’ message, reports advise that the film will see good growth in the extensive run.

While Oh My God had good business in Gujarat, its sequel has been a washout in public, with Gadar 2 dominating the circuit. Although the scales have tipped in Gadar 2’s favor, besides OMG 2 is currently at the bottom, their collective total has re-energized the Indian box office that failed to draw in the masses over the first half.

Overall, it will be an excellent weekend for the film business and theatres nationwide.

OMG, 1 was a sharp satire that aimed to criticize how charlatans exploit the mutual man under the guise of religion. One man’s fight in the court of law against an ‘act of God’ and God themself further named out the commercialization of religion.

Today, the ecosphere is different. I entered the theatre to watch OMG 2 with skepticism. But the film was good in the means I expected it to be. This time, the film moves into newer, if equivalent, territory.

OMG 2 Review

OMG is a charming franchise that has the potential to be the gift that keeps on giving. Through the number of gods in our world and the never-ending social troubles in our society, it is a match made in some god’s blissful abode. Suppose Lord Krishna comes to save Kanji Lalji Mehta, who sues God in the initial installment of the franchise. In that case, Lord Mahakaal descends to attendant Kanti Sharan Mudgal’s legal fight against a school that fails to communicate sex education to its son. Director Amit Rai doesn’t pull back any hits while delivering an engaging, insightful, compelling, and poignant sermon on the position of sex education in India.

Interestingly, OMG 2 commences with visuals of naked Sadhus praying to Lord Mahakaal, and it does a pertinent picture of how the physical form of men isn’t something that we are antagonistic to seeing without any filters. The film revolves around Kanti Sharan’s son, Vivek, doubting his masculinity; subsequently, his classmates insult his lack of sexual awareness. This instills fear about his manhood and takings him down a spiral that sees him approach quacks and snake-oil peddlers, besides finally ending up in a viral video featuring him masturbating in his college toilet.

This is a terrific start to the film, and it is pleasing how this is narrated to a terrified, god-fearing Kanti Sharan, whose first answer to the fiasco is turning into fear AND flight mode. It is the divine intervention ft. Akshay Kumar ushers him into Fight mode, and OMG 2 is on cruise rapidity from here till the finish line.

Impressively enough, OMG 2 doesn’t bring the whole “India is the most populous country in the world, yet we are ashamed to talk about sex” debate into the narrative because it is done and dusted. While one might argue the whole “Our sculptures and books espoused healthy sex knowledge, so why are we close-minded” isn’t new either, this is better because the onus of guilt is placed on the system and not the people.

Writer-director Amit Rai is clear that normalizing sex education and talking about safe sex, consent, and many more ‘taboo’ topics isn’t enough if it happens on a case-by-case basis. It has to happen holistically through a system that permeates every part of our Indian society, and what is a better approach than the Indian education system? Through this story and placing it within the legal framework, the questions about the archaic nature of sex education in our schools are brought to the fore.
