The Sony PlayStation 5 now supports 8TB SSD

Sony released a new PlayStation 5 beta software update on Monday that includes support for high-capacity 8TB SSDs, Tempest 3D AudioTech compatibility on Dolby Atmos devices, and additional accessibility features. For the time being, beta access will be limited to invited participants in specific countries, but these functionalities will eventually be added to the final version of the software.

While Sony’s PlayStation 5 system fully supports off-the-shelf PCIe 4.0 SSDs, the maximum storage is limited to 4TB.

Sony has increased the maximum capacity of PlayStation 5 discs to 8TB with the new beta firmware, allowing users of the company’s latest systems to store more games locally. This automatically increases PlayStation 5’s competitiveness in comparison to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S, as the latter only supports proprietary storage devices with capacities of up to 2TB.

The latest beta release now includes support for Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech on compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs, or home theatre systems. Tempest 3D AudioTech is specifically developed to cater to Dolby Atmos audio devices, including overhead channels, in order to improve the three-dimensional audion of PlayStation 5 games. Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech was previously only accessible on select headphones.

Gamers can now assign a supplementary controller to a single account, acting as an assist controller, with the new beta release. This allows two controllers to manage a PlayStation 5 console as though only one was in use. This newly added function offers a novel way to play games collectively or to support a friend or child during challenging game sequences.
