UEFA Champions League: All you need to know about the ‘Final Eight’ tournament in Lisbon

All sporting activities came to a standstill since March due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The domestic leagues resumed from May. Bayern Munich won their 8th successive Bundesliga trophy while Juventus lifted their 9th consecutive Serie A trophy. On the other hand, Real Madrid won the LaLiga and Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy after 30 years. Ligue 1 is the only exception among top-five European leagues who didn’t resume their league and declared PSG as the winner by a points-per-game method.

And now, it’s finally time for the UEFA Champions League. UEFA had officially declared that the Champions League last 16 second-leg will resume on 7th August with the final being held on 23rd August. They will host a ‘Final Eight’ tournament in Lisbon, Portugal from 12th August.

All the remaining Champions League last 16 second-legs have now finished with Manchester City, Lyon, Barcelona and Bayern Munich progressing to the quarter-finals. They will now join Paris Saint-Germain, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig who had already qualified for the quarter-finals.

The ‘Final Eight’ tournament will start from 12 August. All the matches will be a single-legged affair.

Quarter-Finals

  1. 12th August – Atalanta vs Paris Saint-Germain; Kick-off time: 12:30 am IST (13th August)
  2. 13th August – RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid; Kick-off time: 12:30 am IST (14th August)
  3. 14th August – Barcelona vs Bayern Munich; Kick-off time: 12:30 am IST (15th August)
  4. 15th August – Manchester City vs Olympique Lyonnais; Kick-off time: 12:30 am IST (16th August)

Semi-Finals

  1. 18th August – Atalanta/Paris Saint-Germain vs RB Leipzig/Atletico Madrid
  2. 19th August – Barcelona/Bayern Munich vs Manchester City/Olympique Lyonnais

Final

23rd August – Winner of semi-final 1 vs Winner of semi-final 2

All the matches will be played in Lisbon’s two major stadiums – Benfica’s Estadio da Luz and Sporting Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade stadium. The final will be held at Estadio da Luz.

Unfortunately, all the matches will be played behind closed doors due to the restrictions put in place for COVID-19 unless the government gives special permissions.

If you’re from India all the matches will be broadcasted on Sony Ten channels. You can also watch the live streaming of the match on Sony Liv.
