Samsung has announced the advent of the first GDDR7 DRAM for Next-Gen GPUs

Samsung has announced the creation of the industry’s first GDDR7 DRAM memory for next-generation GPUs. GDDR7 DRAM development was completed over 8 months after the DRAM was first revealed by the semiconductor maker. Samsung previously announced that GDDR7 will employ PAM3 signalling and have speeds of up to 36 Gbps.

The Samsung GDDR7 memory will be the next DRAM to touch GPUs in the AI, HPC, Gaming, and Automotive categories. The new standard will be placed in next-generation systems from important customers for verification this year, resulting in a significant improvement in overall performance.

According to Samsung, the GDDR7 memory will provide a 40% performance jump and a 20% improvement in power efficiency over the current fastest 24 Gbps GDDR6 DRAM giving up to 16 Gb die sizes.

The initial products will be rated at transfer speeds of up to 32 Gbps, a 33% improvement over GDDR6 memory, and will reach up to 1.5 TB/s of bandwidth on a 384-bit bus interface solution.

The GPU manufacturers, as well as their AIB partners, will undoubtedly have access to GDDR7 memory from Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung. In terms of performance, it appears that PAM3 Signalling is a game changer, allowing 50% more data to be sent than NRZ during the same signalling cycle.

According to reports, the Samsung GDDR7 DRAM will have technology specifically optimised for high-speed work loads, as well as a low-operating voltage version targeted for applications requiring careful power use, such as laptops. Thermal resistance will be reduced by up to 70% thanks to the use of an epoxy moulding compound (EMC) with high thermal conductivity in the new memory standard.

While GDDR6 is still relatively powerful and we have GDDR6X and GDDR6W, it appears that the majority of GPU manufacturers will transition to the newer standard sometime in late 2024 or 2025. Because NVIDIA isn’t slated to release its next-generation gaming portfolio until 2025, AMD’s RDNA 4, which will be released next year, is the most likely contender to utilise such memory configurations.
