FC Barcelona Femeni produced a miraculous comeback in the finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, defeating Wolfsburg 3-2 to win the title for the second time. They had dominated the final the last time they won it in 2021 against Chelsea. But this time around, they were made to dig deep and overturn a two-goal deficit to win the match within 90 minutes.

Wolfsburg, on the other hand, will be heartbroken at having thrown away a perfectly good advantage. But the sheer quality of the women from Catalonia was too much for the German side to handle in the second half.

Wolfsburg were ahead within three minutes of the game starting, and poor mistakes at the back really cost them. By the time they went back into the tunnel, they were already two goals down and it seemed like the Germans had the game in the bag.

Ewa Pajor capitalised on a mistake from Lucy Bronze to score a remarkable opening goal. And later on, it was Alexandra Popp who headed home to double their advantage.

The first half saw FC Barcelona Femeni struggle in dominating the opposition penalty box, even though they had the majority of possession. They had a few chances but never really came close to converting.

Dramatic second half comeback stuns Wolfsburg in Eindhoven

The 45 minutes after the break put up a completely different story. Holding midfielder Patri Guijarro scored a quick fire brace to get her side back on level terms in the final, showing her striker’s instincts to finish off the chances in the box. Within five minutes of the second half, it felt like a completely different game altogether.

And in the 70th minute, Fridolina Rolfö scored the winning goal against her former club to seal the win. Wolfsburg were not able to keep the same composure, and made a costly error leading to the goal. And in the process, squandering a chance to push the game into extra time.

FC Barcelona Femeni have been dominant in the truest sense of the word for the last three years. And their incredible form is now yielding results in Europe as well. Having qualified for four of the last five UEFA Women’s Champions League finals, they have won two. And if they keep up their current level, it is only a matter of time before they start racking up more.
