Jorg Schmadtke has officially joined Liverpool on a short-term deal as their sporting director. He will be officially in charge from July 1, and will be taking care of their transfer business this summer.
The former Wolfsburg director will be replacing Julian Ward, who will be leaving his role after 12 months in charge. The German will have a huge task on his hands this summer, having to replace the club’s midfield and bring in new players that will be able to guide them back to their former glory as one of the title challengers.
Liverpool announce arrival of Jorg Schmadtke as sporting director
“Jorg will work with our football operations department as it continues to provide support for Jurgen Klopp, in keeping with our ongoing endeavour to keep growing and developing the club in all areas,” Mike Gordon, the president of Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, said in a statement.
“We must also bid a fond farewell to Julian Ward, who has served us with unstinting diligence, fortitude and energy in a number of roles.”
Jorg Schmadtke will be working in cooperation with Jurgen Klopp to identify targets that fit the manager’s needs. As things stand, the deal for Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton is being worked on by the new sporting director. Moreover, a loan spell for Fabio Carvalho is also being looked at.
