Italian football is on its way back, after a steady decline which saw a sharp decline of Serie A clubs over the last decade. From the domination that Milan and Inter had in the 2000s, the 2010s saw both clubs struggle to appear, and progress deep into the latter stages of the tournament.
Although Juventus enjoyed a decade of dominance, and managed to make it to the finals of the competition, they were the only club to benefit in the 2010s. Things have taken a turn now, with the Bianconeri falling off and making way for Inter, Milan, and now, Napoli to win the Scudetto.
Italian football makes a comeback in 2023 after languishing for years
In the semi finals of the Champions League, Milan, Napoli and Inter were present. The Rossoneri were able to overcome Napoli in spite of their remarkable performance this season, but bowed out to their local rivals who now have a meeting with Manchester City in the finals.
In the Europa League as well, Roma and Juventus made it to the semi-finals. Sevilla defeated the Turin-based side to reach yet another final, while Jose Mourinho has made it to consecutive European finals after winning the Conference League with Roma last season.
Fiorentina, lastly, have a chance to win the Europa Conference League, facing West Ham United in the finals. All three European competitions have an Italian team in the final, and there is a chance for an Italian treble. But the likelihood is very slim for Italian football to pull off this feat as all three Italian sides are the underdogs in their respective finals.
But, it has been a remarkable few years for Italian football in recent years. It now remains to be seen how things evolve for them in the coming years and whether they can improve financially as well to better compete with the rest of Europe.
