Google starts experimenting with AI in its Searches

The impact of ChatGPT’s recent success on Google is still very shocking – the search giant has been scurrying in public for the past few months to come up with its own alternative. It introduced its own approach to incorporating AI into search today at its I/O conference.

Google, on the other hand, is starting small with a Labs-labeled project. This is currently only available in the United States, in English, and only on Chrome for desktop and the Google app for Android and iOS.

For example, you can search for “what’s better for a family with kids under 3 and a dog, bryce canyon or arches”, and generative AI will provide you with a snapshot of crucial information to consider.

You can then ask your own follow-up question or select one of the suggested follow-up questions. This will take you to a new conversational mode in which context is carried over from question to question and you’ll find useful jumping-off points to web information as well as “a range of perspectives you can dig into.”

Because it can interpret complex search words, generative AI can also assist you when shopping. When you search for a product, you’ll get another snapshot, this time with important factors to consider and products that meet the bill. Product descriptions include up-to-date, relevant reviews, ratings, pricing, and photos.

Google claims it is committed to continuing to provide valuable traffic to sites all around the web, rather than having you stay on its search page all day talking to the AI.

Ads will also continue to show in designated places throughout the search page, as the business feels that “ads are a vital piece of how the web works, and help people find relevant products and services.”

Google guarantees that it has trained its models to “uphold Search’s high bar for quality” and that it will continue to improve the models over time. Signups for Search Labs have already started, with access to the new generative AI features available in the coming weeks.
