Vice President Kamala Harris and other senior officials from the Biden administration will meet with top executives from leading technology companies, including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, to discuss critical issues relating to artificial intelligence (AI).
The White House representative who confirmed the meeting emphasised that President Joe Biden expects businesses to give their products’ safety top priority before making them available to the general public.
Concerns about artificial intelligence technology’s rapid growth centre on issues such as privacy violations, bias, and the potential proliferation of scams and misinformation. Back in April, US Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged that it is unclear whether AI is dangerous, but emphasised that technology companies have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their products.“Social media has already demonstrated the harm that powerful technologies can do without the right safeguards,” he added.
As public concern grows about the impact of AI on national security and education, the administration has actively sought public feedback on proposed accountability measures for artificial intelligence systems.
Deputies from the White House Domestic Policy Council and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy recently published a blog post warning about the serious risks that artificial intelligence (AI) can pose to workers.
Senior administration officials, including Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, will attend the meeting on Thursday. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology has piqued the interest of lawmakers, with some advocating for increased government oversight.
