Sergio Busquets is expected to continue at Barcelona for one more season, according to Fabrizio Romano. The veteran midfielder has received offers from the MLS over a free transfer in the summer, since his contract is running out.
But, Xavi Hernandez has always maintained that his former midfield partner is a key part of his project and that he would want Busquets to stay for one more season.
Sergio Busquets to stay at Barcelona until 2024
“Let’s see how the season ends, he’s very important, he’s an example as a captain to his teammates”, Xavi told Goal earlier this month.
“I have told him many times, I want him to continue, but I understand, that if everything goes well he can leave with another title, and he would leave in a very good moment.
“It’s difficult. I will insist that he continues.”
While offers from other clubs have been arriving for the Spaniard, he has also had talks with Barcelona over a renewal. But the main decision has always been his, based on where he wants his career to take him next. As per Romano, an agreement between the two is close and we will see him lead the club next season as well.
Whether or not Sergio Busquets will be asked to take a wage cut is unclear. The reason being that Barcelona need to cut down on their expenses significantly while still adding to the squad. And a reduction in salary could potentially open up space for a new player to be registered.
