The AMD subreddit has reports of AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs catching fire and destroying the ASUS X670 series motherboard with it. Less than a month has passed since AMD unveiled its eagerly awaited Ryzen 7 7800X3D 3D V-Cache CPU. The CPU has been selling like hotcakes in the DIY market, but it appears that the AMD Subreddit has received the first report of it dying.
u/Speedrookie, a Reddit user, posted about the malfunctioning AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU. The ASUS ROG STRIX X670-E board was used in the system, which was seen operating in idle mode with all of the fans spinning. The motherboard’s DEBUG LED displayed the code 00 QCode.

The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU had a significant bulge on its contact pad, and the underlying LGA pins were also burnt out close to that location when the user disassembled the system.
As can be seen, the burn marks on the chip’s underside cover about 10 to 12 gold contact pads, making the chip useless. Additionally indicating that the board has failed are the burn marks on the socket.
It’s difficult to diagnose the issue without more information because the user hasn’t mentioned whether overclocking or overvoltages were used, but there is evidence that this issue may be connected to ASUS’s X670 series motherboards. Similar problems were also reported on ASUS AM5 motherboards running a different Ryzen CPU (Ryzen 9 7950X3D), according to the Russian channel VIK-off.
It’s also important to note that overclocker Der8auer recently released a video in which he accidentally destroyed an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU by raising the voltages. His motherboard, the ROG X670E Crosshair Extreme from ASUS, was also an AM5 model. The “00” code was also reported by this motherboard when it failed. The motherboard reportedly allowed for voltages that were higher than what AMD 3D V-Cache CPUs could handle, which caused the chip to self-destruct.
