ASUS ROG Ally will reportedly sport the AMD Z1 Extreme With 8 Cores also AMD Z1 With 6 Cores

For the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console, AMD appears to be putting the finishing touches on two unique Ryzen Z1 series APUs based on its Phoenix design. The custom AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU created for the ASUS ROG Ally handheld gaming console was demonstrated recently.

The APU belongs to the Phoenix family but has its own designated Z1 series branding rather than the Ryzen 7040 nomenclature. In earlier tests, we saw the Extreme variant, but the most recent benchmarks indicate the existence of another SKU.

The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme comes equipped with 8 Zen 4 cores, 16 MB of L3 cache, and 8 MB of L2 cache. It has a 3.30 GHz base clock that boosts to almost 5.1 GHz, and its TDP should be in the 15–28W range. The Radeon 780M iGPU has a total of 768 cores and 12 RDNA 3 compute units. Although the Geekbench database only lists the base clock of 800 MHz, these should easily clock above 2 GHz.

The AMD Ryzen Z1 APU, which has 6 Zen 4 cores, 12 threads, 16 MB of L3 cache, and 6 MB of L2 cache, is also available in addition to the Z1 Extreme. Lower base and boost clocks for this chip are set to 3.20 GHz and 5.0 GHz, respectively. For only 256 cores, the GPU-side has 4 RDNA 3 compute units. The Radeon 780M iGPU used in the Extreme has 66% fewer cores, and the base clock is once more 800 MHz.

It’s unclear if this chip will be a second SKU or if it will only be used in a prototype version of the ASUS ROG Ally portable gaming system.

According to Videocardz, there are two variations of the ASUS ROG Ally handheld console: the RC71L and the RC71X. However, only the RC71L variant is said to use AMD’s Z1 Extreme and Z1 APUs. The ASUS ROG Ally will use the fastest custom-built APU to date developed by AMD & ROG, according to ASUS’ announcement video.

However, that is yet to be determined. The renders give it the appearance of being a modified version of AMD Rembrandt or Phoenix APUs. Considering that we are discussing RDNA 3, it will support AMD’s RSR and FSR capabilities while offering up to twice the performance of Steam Deck at its maximum 35W TDP.
