Burnley have returned to the Premier League by sealing promotion from the Championship. The Clarets have spent this season in the second division, after their relegation at the end of 2021/22, and under Vincent Kompany, they have been the most impressive side in the second division.
Following Milwall’s draw with Luton Town, Burnley were able to defeat one of the favourites to go up into the Premier League, Middlesbrough, 2-1 to seal their spot. Goals from Ashley Barnes and Connor Roberts were enough to get all three points in the big game.
Burnley back in the Premier League from the Championship
Arguably the most impressive part about the team’s performance this season is that they have only lost two games in the league. Their defeats in Cup competitions puts them at only four losses this season, which is a remarkable achievement no matter what way you look at it.
Burnley have accumulated 87 points from 39 games, and are almost destined to win the Championship unless they drop off now. Sheffield United are next in line to return to the Premier League, as they are currently second in the table.
Middlesbrough have a place in the playoffs as things stand, but will need to put in a courageous effort to win the mini tournament.
As for who Burnley will replace in the Premier League – it really is anybody’s guess. The relegation race is the tightest it has been in years, but Southampton seem to be less preferred to stay up in two month’s time.
