The long-awaited Overdrive RT settings for Cyberpunk 2077 are about to bring about an entirely new graphical upgrade, but the most recent information about this feature has made it abundantly clear that it won’t be simple to run by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it seems more and more clear that CP2077 with Overdrive RT enabled will be the Crysis of this generation.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been able to improve since its initial setbacks, despite the fact that there were plenty of them. Along with the aforementioned visual upgrade, the game’s developer, CDPR, has been working on several years’ worth of updates and free content releases. In addition, a sizable new DLC is forthcoming.
In a recent blog post, graphics card maker Nvidia discussed the new RT Overdrive graphics settings that will be added to Cyberpunk 2077 as part of the game’s April 11 content update. By activating RT Overdrive, the game’s default lighting engine is essentially replaced with a fully ray-traced alternate that appears remarkably realistic in motion. This lighting technique, also known as path tracing, is so hardware-intensive that using it without any upscaling absolutely destroys the RTX 4090, Nvidia’s most potent graphics processor.
When running Cyberpunk 2077 with Overdrive RT enabled, even the extremely powerful RTX 4090 can only manage a pitiful 16 FPS, proving once and for all that path tracing is a cutting-edge technology.
Nvidia DLSS AI-based upscaling will make the game playable in the vast majority of cases, especially for RTX 4000 users, according to the company’s video showcase, so owners of Nvidia GPUs need not worry.
Since Cyberpunk 2077’s DLSS 3.0 implementation has been out for a while, RTX 4000 owners can use the built-in AI hardware on their graphics cards to generate frames instantly. As long as the player doesn’t mind relying on upscaling technologies to accomplish that, this is precisely what enables the RTX 4090 to run CP2077 at over 100 FPS even with Overdrive Ray Tracing settings enabled.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
