CONMEBOL unveiled a new Lionel Messi statue at their event ahead of the Copa Libertadores draw on Monday. The statue will be kept at the headquarters of the South American football authority, next to those of Diego Maradona and Pele.

Messi was also presented with the ‘baton of football’ for his contribution to the South American football legacy. The 35-year-old captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, lifting the trophy after 36 years.

Speaking about his career, here is what Messi had to say: “I had never dreamed or thought about this. My dream was to enjoy what I liked when I was little, to be a professional soccer player, to do what I always loved in this life.

“I had a very long road, many decisions and defeats, but I always looked ahead and wanted to go for a triumph, for a victory. I think that is the most important thing, to fight for your dreams, that everything is possible and to enjoy the game, which is the most beautiful thing there is.

“We are living a very special and beautiful moment, getting a lot of love. It was time for a South American team to win the World Cup again.”

For Argentina, the forward has scored 99 goals in 173 games. After years and years of failing to win anything with them, he has won the Copa America, Finalissima and the World Cup with the national team, completing his quest for every major trophy in the sport.
