Apple’s Dynamic Island feature to get a Proximity Sensor with the new iPhone 15

We’ve long suspected that every phone in the upcoming iPhone 15 line will inherit the Dynamic Island from the iPhone 14 Pro (and Pro Max), but we’re now hearing that the new phones’ digital notches will be different from the ones found on Apple’s flagship devices.

According to reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s tweet, the iPhone 15’s proximity sensor will be integrated within the Dynamic Island itself, rather than positioned below it (as on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max).

When you raise your iPhone to your ear, the proximity sensor detects it. To prevent accidental operations, the sensor turns off the screen when triggered.

As Kuo points out, the new sensor arrangement is unlikely to make a significant difference in the appearance or functionality of the iPhone 15 versus the iPhone 14 Pro, but the former’s Dynamic Island will be more advanced than the latter’s due to the inclusion of a previously isolated sensor.

The news lends support to the notion that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will indeed receive the Dynamic Island, one of our favourite features on Apple’s latest Pro-grade handsets.

Both phones are expected to get the iPhone 14 Pro’s high-resolution 48MP camera. However, for every one-time premium feature coming to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, two even more premium features appear to be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 15 Ultra.

For example, a top-of-the-line chip upgrade – most likely in the form of an A17 Bionic – will inevitably be reserved for Apple’s most expensive iPhones, with recent leaks indicating that this processor could make these handsets as fast as some of the best MacBooks. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, on the other hand, are expected to carry over last year’s A16 Bionic processor.
