An earlier leak of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 specifications revealed that Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship SoC for 2023 would feature a ‘1 + 5 + 2’ CPU cluster and would be mass-produced on TSMC’s 4nm process. However, an update from someone who has previously leaked reliable information mentions a completely revamped configuration. In addition, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is said to use ‘titanium’ cores for the first time.

Let us begin with the model number and codename. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will have the unique designation number SM8650, as well as the codenames ‘Lanai’ or ‘Pineapple,’ according to Kuba Wojciechowski, who started a lengthy Twitter thread. The most intriguing aspect of the latest leak is the CPU configuration, which indicates that the flagship chipset will have a ‘1 + 2 + 3 + 3’ cluster with a mix of ‘gold+’ and ‘titatium’ cores.

This is the first time Qualcomm has used ‘titanium’ cores, with the single ‘gold+’ core indicating that it is most likely the Cortex-X4. Earlier reports suggested that this core could operate at 3.70GHz, but it was unclear whether this frequency would be reserved for the Galaxy S24 series, which is expected to launch next year.

According to the CPU configuration, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 uses fewer power-efficiency cores this time, implying that Qualcomm is more focused on delivering higher multi-core performance.

There are three gold cores added to the CPU cluster, which is a step up. The ‘titanium’ cores, according to the tipster, could be clocked faster and have a higher cache than the ‘gold’ ones, but he does not have concrete information right now.

We’ll learn more about ARM’s ‘Hayes’ and ‘Hunter’ cores later this year and see how they compare to the Cortex-X3 and Cortex-A715 in 2022. Following that, we should have a better idea of how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will perform when powering various flagships in 2024. According to Qualcomm’s code spotted by Kuba, the ‘Hayes’ and ‘Hunter’ also lose 32-bit support.

The Adreno 750 GPU will replace the Adreno 740 GPU found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. While we previously reported that the Adreno 750 would run at an impressive 1.00GHz, the new update indicates that the graphics processor is now running at 770MHz, which may change as future revisions of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 are made and tested. It is possible that the 1.00GHz GPU clock speed was modified for the Galaxy S24 family, but there is no way to confirm this at this time.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is rumoured to be built on TSMC’s 4nm process, the same as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but Qualcomm appears to have heavily modified the design. If the company’s primary goal is to improve multi-core performance, our main concern is increased power draw and temperatures.
