Jonathan David scored a hat-trick against Lyon as the two teams settled for a 3-3 draw. The Canadian striker moved past Eden Hazard, and emerged as the leading goalscorer for the club with 53 goals to his name in the 21st century.
He now has 19 goals in Ligue 1 this season, and shares the top spot in the race for the Golden Boot with Kylian Mbappe.
Jonathan David sets club record with hat-trick vs Lyon
Speculation about his future has been ripe, but the player remains focused on his current club for the time being.
“The furthest I can see for the moment is the next game and helping Lille get back into top four,” Jonathan David said after his performance against Lyon.
“Saturday mornings growing up in Canada were about the Premier League and La Liga. Premier League and La Liga are every kid’s dream.”
“This isn’t something I set out to do, but it feels great. I have a lot of respect for Eden Hazard as a player, and to have broken his record here at home is very special,” he told reporters when asked about the record.
Clubs like Newcastle United, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in signing him this summer. And it will be interesting to see which club wins the race to sign the Canada international.
