Sony’s long-awaited WF-1000XM5 wireless earbuds have been spotted on the FCC website, indicating an impending release. These earbuds will be the successor to Sony’s popular WF-1000XM4 earbuds, which were released in June 2021.
According to the FCC listing, the new earbuds will support Bluetooth 5.3 and Bluetooth LE, as well as Qualcomm aptX Lossless, allowing them to compete with other premium earbuds on the market.
The Sony WF-1000XM5 is expected to retain the touch panel from its predecessor, which was widely praised for its user-friendly controls.
It’s unclear whether the earbuds will be completely redesigned, as Sony’s WH-1000XM5 over-the-ear headphones were. However, the new earbuds are expected to receive a battery upgrade as well as other performance enhancements.
The recently leaked Bose QuietComfort Ultra is expected to be a strong competitor to the Sony WF-1000XM5. Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds II have already been available for some time, making it even more important for Sony to deliver a compelling offering to remain competitive. While the FCC listing doesn’t reveal much about the new earbuds, it does indicate that they will be available soon, possibly as soon as July 2023.
The price of the new earbuds is one source of concern for potential buyers. Given current market conditions, it is likely that the Sony WF-1000XM5 will be more expensive than its predecessor. Those on a tight budget, however, can still get a pair of XM4s, which are expected to be discounted after the new earbuds are released.
