The CIES Football Observatory has released their list of the clubs with the most net spending over the last 5 seasons including add-ons. And to no one’s surprise, it is dominated by English clubs, further illustrating their financial power over the rest of the continent.

Ninth-placed Juventus has the biggest deficit among non-English clubs (-€337m), and they are currently facing the consequences of their business. After being investigated for false accounting of transfers, the Bianconeri have been docked 15 points in Serie A. Moreover, their whole board has resigned as a result of the allegations.

Chelsea top the list with a massive net spend of €749 million. Even including their transfer embargo, and big money sales like Eden Hazard, they have topped the list. More interestingly, €620 million has been spent in the current season, including the summer and January transfer windows.

The West London side have lifted the Champions League, and Europa League since 2018/19, bringing a presentable return for the most net spending over the last 5 seasons.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, Wolves, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all feature in the top ten as well. But apart from the Gunners, none of the other clubs have been able to win silverware during this time period in spite of their huge spending.

On the flipside, Benfica top the list of most positive revenue with a net gain of €369 million. The big-money sales of Joao Felix, Darwin Nunez and Enzo Fernandez have been crucial to the Portuguese side achieving such a huge profit.
