Microsoft has announced a new version of its Bing search engine powered by a version of the same AI that powers ChatGPT. The company also announced during an event at its Redmond, Washington, headquarters that it is updating the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look.

Bing has been around for 13 years, but it still only has a 3% share of the browser market, compared to Google’s 93%, but Microsoft believes that incorporating OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into its search engine will help close that massive gap. “It’s a new day in search,” CEO Satya Nadella declared.

The new Bing is now available to try in a limited version on desktop—you can sign up for a waitlist to get the full version. The search engine displays traditional results alongside an AI-powered sidebar with more detailed answers. Users can also directly ask the chatbot questions, similar to ChatGPT.

According to Microsoft, the new Bing provides more relevant results, can summarise them from multiple sources, and can refine answers.

It can also plan a vacation, prepare users for job interviews, retrieve news about current events, and much more. Microsoft also demonstrated Bing creating a daily itinerary for a five-day trip to Mexico City. Meanwhile, the updated Edge browser includes new Chat and Compose features. The former allows users to summarise web pages and ask questions about their contents, whereas the latter assists in the generation of email and social media posts.

In the new Bing and Edge, Microsoft is utilising an upgraded version of the GPT 3.5 language model, which powers OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to the company, this “Prometheus” model is more powerful than the famous chatbot and can better answer search queries.
