Tekken 8 has released a new video that explains some of the mechanics of the upcoming fighting game. It has been eight years since the release of Tekken 7, which first appeared in arcades in 2015 before making its way to consoles and PC in 2017. Tekken 7 has not been ported to the new generation of consoles, but it is playable on both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S thanks to backwards compatibility features.

In its long history, the Tekken series has seen its fair share of new mechanics. In Tekken 7, Rage Arts were introduced, which are powerful and cinematic attacks that can be unleashed when a player’s character’s health is low. While new mechanics have proven divisive in some games, Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada and his team appear to be very particular about the changes they make, taking care to ensure that it enhances the player’s experience rather than alienating longtime fans. Because of this design philosophy, Tekken has remained one of the most popular fighting franchises in history.

Tekken 8 executive director Katsuhiro Harada and game director Kohei Ikeda spoke about some of the new features fans can expect in the upcoming game in a new keynote.

The pair detailed changes to the current Rage system, such as the elimination of Rage Drive techniques and the unification of the Rage Art command across all characters. The next topic they discussed was the new Recovery Gauge, which Harada claims is very similar to a mechanic in Tekken Tag Tournament.

This new feature will allow the player to regain some health if they successfully block a big move from their opponent. To regain this health, the player must go on the offensive and either damage or force their opponent to block.

The Heat System is the next new Tekken 8 mechanic, and it is designed to be extremely beneficial to the attacker. It has a dedicated Heat Gauge that allows the player to pummelled their opponent for 10 seconds, which can be extended by attacking. The Heat condition also improves certain moves and combos, as well as allowing the player to perform a devastating Heat Smash attack.

Tekken 8 is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
