There were rumours surrounding Huawei’s stay at the UK and today in a formal way the UK government has announced the removal of existing equipment of Huawei by 2027. The Chinese smartphone giant had played a huge role in the country’s 5G network and also had a great smartphone market in the country as well.
Almost all countries are furious on China and the companies based out of China, so a lot of countries including the US and India are getting rid of Chinese equipments & products out of their system. It all started when the US banned Huawei a year ago and the COVID-19, that originated from China, has just escalated the anger over Chinese products.
The UK government has even imposed a ban on buying new equipment from the company from December 31 this year. For such large step, obviously, there remains the hands of the US government and and a technical review by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NSC) in response to US sanctions.
Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said in a statement to the House of Commons: “By the time of the next election we will have implemented in law an irreversible path for the complete removal of Huawei equipment from our 5G networks”.
“5G will be transformative for our country, but only if we have confidence in the security and resilience of the infrastructure it is built upon. Following US sanctions against Huawei and updated technical advice from our cyber experts, the government has decided it is necessary to ban Huawei from our 5G networks”.
“No new kit is to be added from January 2021, and UK 5G networks will be Huawei free by the end of 2027. This decisive move provides the industry with the clarity and certainty it needs to get on with delivering 5G across the UK”.
The decision was taken on in a meeting of the NSC and the ban was imposed on Huawei in May itself after the UK’s initial decision on high risk vendors. Huawei uses a lot of technology based out of the US companies and so the UK government has to remove the firm’s access to products which have been built based on US semiconductor technology.
This ban is a result to remove the Chinese based company’s tech in sensitive and critical parts of the network. The officials also doubt that the new restrictions will make it impossible to continue to guarantee the security of Huawei equipment in the future as well. So, this is a major setback from Huawei because the UK is a huge market from them and being removed from 5G network can be the first step of its stay as it is involved in a variety of technology in the country.
