Barcelona are in the advanced stages of negotiating a deal for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves. The deal will be negotiated in the summer, and he will be the replacement for Sergio Busquets once the club legend’s deal expires.
However, Xavi has doubts about how suited the Portugal international will be to their system. He believes that Neves is better equipped to play in a double pivot or as an interior midfielder.
Ruben Neves to Barcelona in the summer?
“Ruben Neves is a great player, but this is part of private conversations. Busquets will not be eternal and there are internal discussions to find a guaranteed successor for him,” Joan Laporta said.
“Frenkie de Jong can play in this position, but it won’t be down to just one player. Xavi will decide.”
There are rumours that another player will be included in the deal to drive down the cost to sign the midfielder. Nico Gonzalez or Franck Kessie could move the other way, with Neves seemingly set to join the Catalonian side.
Several clubs have been keeping tabs on the 25-year-old, such as Manchester United. But, the player rejected all their offers in favour of a stay at Wolves. And barring Xavi’s approval, the perfect offer seems to be on the table for the midfielder.
